In many ways, the subjects of the three documentaries presented in this year’s Sonica strand couldn’t be more different. After all, what could the legendary blues singer Joe Cocker have in common with Helmut Lachenmann, the composer whose music features the sounds of snapping twigs, or Australia’s self-styled “queen of honky-tonk”, Wanita?

But what unites these distinct characters is an undeniable dedication to their craft, as well as a need to always push themselves and their creative output to new heights; there is no doubt that any of them could be anything other than artists.

Join us for the chaotic and the mundane, the glamour and the hangover of the lives of three undeniably compelling musicians.
